Chapter Eleven

“How the hell did you find me?”

Silas pointed up into the sky. My eyes followed to where the biggest of the crows sat on a window ledge three stories above us.

“Julian took off about two hours ago. I followed him. He seemed to know what you’d be up to before you did.” He laughed but I wasn’t amused. I started walking at a break-neck pace up Eighth Street towards the Tattoo Parlor. Silas followed, easily matching my steps.

“I saw McFinney.” I told him. Part of me hoped it would make him squirm, knowing the man he hated had gotten so close. Silas had stopped laughing. The look in his eyes was a mixture of worry and fear. “Don’t worry he didn’t tell me any of your secrets.” Silas frowned and tried to position himself in front of me to force me to stop. I stepped off the sidewalk, into the street, to dodge him and continued walking. “I saw Joel too.” I confessed. At this, Silas grabbed me by the hand and pulled me backwards. I landed into his arms. “Let go.” I placed both my hands on his chest and pushed away from him.

“Joel found you?”

“Yes.” He was trying to lull me with that intoxicating scent of his. It only made me angrier. “He spoke a bunch of bullshit gibberish. I think he was drunk. Complete waste of time.” I started briskly walking away but he was holding on to my wrist with a grip like stone.

“What exactly did Joel say?”

“If I tell you will you let me go?”

“Not a chance.” I tried to yank my arm away but he held firm, “Why are you so angry?”

I clenched my fist, “It’s just…”

Just that seeing you with those pretty girls made me ridiculously jealous?

That I’m angry with myself for feeling jealous when I know I shouldn’t be?

That your crazy supernatural world keeps impeding on my perfectly normal one?

“…nothing. I just don’t understand how someone called The Oracle could leave himself in such a state.”

“Think about it. If you spend your whole existence knowing things no one else can know - knowing when someone is going to die and not being able to tell them, knowing when someone you love is going to betray you even before they do it, knowing secrets you’re not supposed to know - it would leave you isolated, unable to get close to anyone, unable to love. Wouldn’t living a life like that drive you to drink? To find escape wherever you could? To find any means necessary to keep people away so that you don’t get hurt again?”

Something I had been wondering finally made sense to me.

“That’s why he made Veruca? A rat with a human soul. Something who wouldn’t care what he knows about them and wouldn’t judge him… for his lifestyle choices?”

Silas nodded slowly.

I relaxed and he released my arm, “So, what did he tell you?”

“Something about my brothers having secrets - and that there’s some sort of object that they all handled.
